The Summit, for orchestra

1011-3221-Timp+2, Str

I had been attempting to write The Summit since my freshman year. Packed with rhythmic and melodic motives that have been hanging out in my head for far too long, I’m thankful to have it completed, and to be able to share it. Sometimes music won't finish itself until a story emerges, and this summer while driving through New Mexico, I found that story. While on the road, after many mind-numbing hours of Texan farmland (the rhythmic motive in the strings), I suddenly realized that I was surrounded by beautiful mountains and hills like I had never seen. I stopped at Capulin Volcano and decided to walk to the top. As I walked up, there was no one in sight and almost complete silence. When I finally got to the top, I realized that I was walking through clouds, and felt like I was flying! For me, finishing this piece is like summiting a mountain, and without the support of my family, mentors, teachers and friends, I would not be where I am today. To all of those people, thank you for the many years of support and invaluable guidance.
